An evergreen shrub with upright stems and a compact, bushy form. Slender, oval leaves are green with burgundy new growth. Foliage tints purple in winter. Female flowers are made up of burgundy-red bracts that surround light green cones. Blooms at branch tips in winter and spring. Long-lasting cut flower. Likes acidic soils. Does not tolerate phosphorous fertilizers.
