During autumn, the canopy transforms from shades of emerald green to vibrant hues of yellow, rosy pink, and scarlet red before dropping to the earth. Small, spidery flowers are borne from bare branches during late winter and early spring, and contrast against furrowed, flaky gray bark. 'Vanessa' is a dense and upright form, growing about half as wide as the species.
