A deciduous tree with an attractive horizontal branching structure. Glossy, dark green leaves turn stunning shades in fall, from yellow-green to orange-red and reddish-purple. Small, dark blue fruits are produced if a male tree is nearby. Fruit is edible, yet very sour. Flowers and berries are beneficial to pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Native to the eastern U.S.
