Common Name: Evergreen Huckleberry, California Huckleberry

An evergreen shrub that forms a dense thicket. Foliage emerges reddish-bronze and matures to lustrous dark green. Leaves are simple, oval, and toothed on the edges. Spring flowers are pinkish white, urn-shaped, and pendent. Edible fruits are dark purple, tasty, and can be eaten raw, dried, or in place of blueberries in a recipe. Fruit ripens in early fall. Attracts pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Native to the foggy Pacific Coast, including California. Needs acidic soil, pH 4.0 - 6.0.
