A deciduous shrub with upright, arching branches and exfoliating, red bark. Aromatic leaves are fuzzy, lobed, gray green, and serrated on the edges. Foliage turns red in fall. Long, drooping clusters of winter flowers are white and deep pink. Flowers are larger than the species. Berries are blackish blue with a powdery-waxy outer coating. Attracts birds, especially hummingbirds. Native to California.
