A waterside deciduous shrub with a wine-like fragrance. Leaves are glossy, broad, oval, and bright green. Water lily-like, deep red flowers emerge at the tips of branchlets and are followed by pear-shaped seed capsules. Native to California, it is pollinated by native beetles.
