Common Name: Black Lace Black Elder, European Elder
A deciduous shrub with a suckering, multi-branching growth habit. Dark purple compound leaves are finely dissected. From late spring into summer, lacy pink lemon-scented flower clusters bloom, followed by heavy clusters of small glossy reddish black fruit in fall. The edible fruit is eaten dried, in herbal medicines, syrup, wine, pie, and jam. Eat raw fruit only when ripe. Not as tasty as S. canadensis. Flowers are also edible. Attracts birds, wildlife, and pollinators.
